Having Systems

I love to cook for the people in my life. One can say it's a love language. One thing any proper cook will tell you is the kitchen has to be well arranged, with the utensils and ingredients stored in the appropriate places. There should be a flow, a path that the preparation process follows. Put the kitchen sink, the freezer, your saucepans, or your salt in the wrong place and it becomes a bad dance about. Add two or three staff into the mix and someone will lose their temper in 30 minutes or less for every hour you are there. Businesses can be like that.

Let's imagine this. Your fridge/freezer is next to a small counter close to the sink. This can also be close to your pantry, allowing you to clean and prep ingredients quickly without roaming the length of the kitchen four times. Bowls, knives, and a saucepan should be close by the sink, with the next two steps leading up to another short-to-medium countertop and then your stovetop. Your spices and condiments should be within reach here. After the stove, another short countertop to receive cooked food, with serving utensils, plates, and spoons close by to serve your cooked food, completes your cooking journey. We can loop back to the freezer with a straight walk that ends a definite activity, only if there are leftovers to store.

This can be related to your staff and HR management. Setting up your handbook, SOPs, policies, employment contracts, KPIs, and other needed systems are the utensils, freezers, and plates you need in your kitchen. Without them, you and your staff will go around in circles, questioning everything, busy for the whole day with little to no fruitful results.

Yes, in the beginning, for simple processes, or the first 12 to 36 months, things aren't too difficult. You butt heads a few times, but you figure something out. Then one day you are making waakye with everything: the shito, spaghetti, salad, fish, boiled eggs, wele, and beef, for a large group, and everything falls apart.

It will be messy. It will be chaotic. But most of all, it will be a very expensive mistake that might even have legal repercussions. I am sure you realize we have left the kitchen by now.
